Great time to be a Ham

Now is a great time to be a ham.  I know.  Doesn’t matter whether you are trying voice, data or CW, it is almost impossible to make a contact.  That is one reason this is a good time to be a ham.

When I got my ticket in April of 1990 you could just about make the full contact without ever turning on the radio.  I jest of course, but the bands were wide open and all modes were busy with traffic almost all day long.  Doesn’t that sound great?  Most of us dream of when that will happen again.

For new hams or even just someone interested in Ham Radio, the Sun goes through cycles of sunspot activity.  When the cycle is at maximum or at the peak of the activity you can expect radio bands to be open and depending on the bands you are able to transmit on, a ham can usually make contacts with other hams somewhere in the world any time of the day or night.

A normal sun cycle is said to be 11 years from minima to maxima.  We are currently over five years into sun cycle 24.  Sun cycles 23 and 24 have been one of the lowest periods of sunspot activity in over a hundred years.
